The present tense
In Spanish, verbs are conjugated to agree with the subject that is performing the action. The unconjugated form of a verb is called the INFINITIVE. In Spanish, INFINITIVES can end in -AR, -ER, or -IR.
To conjugate a regular verb, remove the -AR, -ER, or -IR and add the ending that corresponds to the subject.
For example:
Cantar (to sing)
To conjugate this verb you would follow these steps:
1. Take off the -AR
2. Add the Present tense endings for -AR verbs
-AR Verbs
yo -o nosotros/as -amos
tú -as vosotros/as -áis
él, ella, usted -a ellos/as, ustedes -an
3. Cantar conjugated
yo canto (I sing) nosotros/as cantamos (we sing)
tú cantas (you sing) vosotros/as cantáis (y’all sing)
él/ella canta (s/he, you sing) ellos/as, ustedes cantan (s/he pl., usted you plural sing)
Here are the endings for -ER and -IR verbs in the present tense.
