Indirect object pronouns
Indirect object pronouns are used in Spanish to avoid repetition and answer the question ‘to/for whom?’. They are:
ME (to/for me) NOS (to/for us)
TE (to/for you) OS (to/for y’all)
LE (to/for him/her/you) LES (to/for them m./f.)
Where do you put them?
The pronoun can be placed before the conjugated verb or after and attached to a present participle or infinitive.
For example:
Le escribí una carta a Ana.
I wrote Ana a letter.
Te voy a escribir mañana –> Voy a escribirte mañana.
I’m going to write you tomorrow.
¿Les vas a dar el dinero? –> ¿Vas a darles el dinero?
Are you going to give them the money?
¿Me estás ofreciendo un trabajo? –> ¿Estas ofreciéndome el trabajo?
Are you offering me a job?
¿Qué me estás preguntando? –> ¿Qué estas preguntándome?
What are you asking me?
Because the pronouns ‘le’ and ‘les’ can refer to multiple people, the preposition ‘a’ can be used to emphasize or clarify to whom it is referring.
For example:
Leila les mande las cartas a mis hermanos.
Leila sends the letters to my brothers.
Le voy a dar un regalo a ella.
I am going to give her a gift.
The following verbs normally use indirect object pronouns:
Contar, contestar, dar, decir, escribir, explicar, hablar, mandar, ofrecer, pagar, pedir, preguntar, regalar
